Shōgun Stitch Overshirt
The Shōgun Stitch Overshirt reinterprets the discipline of Japanese warrior dress through tonal panelwork, exposed construction and a relaxed contemporary silhouette. Crafted from premium fabric in Black and Charcoal, the overshirt is built from contrasting sections that divide the shoulders, sleeves, body and pockets into a deliberate architectural composition.
A narrow black band frames the deep V-neck and continues vertically towards the hem. At the waist, an extended fabric belt passes through a polished metal D-ring, allowing the open front to be drawn closer to the body or worn with greater ease. Oversized patch pockets anchor the lower half, while pale contrast stitching traces their curved details and reveals the construction across the garment.
Wide sleeves, dropped shoulders and a straight hip-length body preserve the ease associated with kimono dressing. The result feels protective without becoming rigid—an overshirt shaped by structure, utility and controlled contrast.
INSPIRATION : The Shōgun Stitch Overshirt takes its name from the shōgun, the military commanders who represented authority, strategy and disciplined power within Japanese history.
Its design does not attempt to reproduce ceremonial or historical clothing. Instead, Insane Shell draws from the principles behind layered warrior dress: broad proportions, overlapping fronts, functional fastening and the careful division of the body through panels.
The deep V-neck recalls the crossing lines of kimono-inspired garments, while the waist fastening suggests the purpose and placement of an obi without imitating one directly. Charcoal sections appear across the shoulders and sleeves like softened pieces of armour, interrupted by visible lines of stitching.
The garment remains relaxed and wearable, but every element carries a sense of intention. Its strength comes from construction rather than decoration—an original Insane Shell interpretation of Japanese-inspired contemporary luxury.
FABRIC : Crafted from premium fabric selected for its substantial handle, refined surface and ability to preserve the overshirt’s structured panel construction.
The material carries enough body to hold the broad shoulders, deep neckline, oversized pockets and wide sleeves without appearing stiff. At the same time, it remains flexible enough to move naturally and layer comfortably over a shirt, vest or lightweight knit.
A subtle tonal pattern is visible across the surface when viewed closely. This understated texture prevents the Black and Charcoal composition from appearing completely flat while preserving its dark, restrained character.
COLOURS — BLACK & CHARCOAL : The overshirt combines Black and Charcoal within a single tonal composition.
Black forms the primary foundation, giving the garment depth and allowing the silhouette to remain visually unified. Charcoal panels are positioned across the shoulders, sleeves and lower construction, revealing the garment’s architecture without creating a harsh colour break.
The difference between the two tones becomes more visible as light travels across the fabric. From a distance, the overshirt appears predominantly dark and monochromatic; at closer range, its separate panels, surface texture and stitching emerge.
Colours may appear slightly different depending on lighting, photography and individual screen settings.
KIMONO-INSPIRED DESIGN : The overshirt is constructed around the openness and proportion traditionally associated with kimono dressing.
Rather than using a conventional shirt collar and central button placket, the neckline remains open and is framed by a narrow band extending towards the waist. The body falls with controlled ease, while the wide sleeves preserve space around the arms.
The waist belt introduces the possibility of adjusting the silhouette without removing its relaxed character. Worn loosely, the garment reads as an open outer layer. Drawn closer through the D-ring, it creates a more defined wrapped shape.
This is not a reproduction of a traditional kimono. It is a contemporary overshirt that translates its principles of line, layering and movement into an original construction.
DEEP V-NECK : A deep V-shaped opening defines the centre of the garment.
The neckline begins high at the back of the neck and descends sharply across the chest, creating an elongated vertical frame. A narrow black facing finishes its edge and separates the open neckline from the contrasting shoulder panels.
The depth is intentional and allows the overshirt to be styled in different ways. It may be worn against the skin for a more editorial expression or layered over a fitted vest, high-neck top, shirt or lightweight knit.
Because the neckline remains open above the waist fastening, the layer worn beneath can become part of the overall composition.
CONTRAST SHOULDER PANELS : Charcoal panels extend across the upper chest and shoulders, establishing the first layer of contrast within the garment.
Their broad, rectangular construction visually strengthens the shoulder line without requiring heavy padding. On one side, the lighter Charcoal tone becomes more pronounced, while the opposite side remains closer to Black, creating subtle tonal imbalance.
Visible stitching follows the edges of these panels and makes their placement legible. The shoulder construction appears almost protective, suggesting the segmented structure of armour while remaining soft and wearable.
CONTRAST PANEL CONSTRUCTION : The Black and Charcoal sections are distributed across the garment rather than confined to one decorative area.
Shoulder panels establish width at the top. Additional Charcoal sections interrupt the sleeves around the forearms, while darker panels return towards the cuffs. The lower front incorporates further tonal contrast around the pockets and centre opening.
These divisions give the overshirt depth without relying on print, embroidery or bright colour. Each seam becomes part of the design, allowing the method of construction to remain visible.
The panels may respond differently to light because of their colour placement and orientation, further emphasising the garment’s segmented architecture.
D-RING WAIST CLOSURE : The overshirt is secured at the waist through a polished metallic D-ring.
A matching extended fabric belt travels horizontally across the body before passing through the ring. This creates a functional closure while introducing a restrained metallic contrast against the Black and Charcoal fabric.
The fastening may be adjusted within the limits of the construction to bring the front edges closer together or preserve a more open silhouette. The belt should sit securely without being pulled excessively tight, allowing the relaxed shape of the overshirt to remain intact.
The curved D-ring interrupts the otherwise angular panelwork and becomes a small but deliberate focal point at the centre of the garment.
EXTENDED WAIST BELT : After passing through the D-ring, the belt continues downward as an elongated fabric tail.
Its extended length is intentional and forms part of the silhouette. The vertical fall of the belt contrasts with the horizontal waist fastening and the deep diagonal lines of the V-neck.
Rather than concealing the remaining length, allow it to hang naturally for the intended styling. Its movement introduces fluidity against the more structured body and patch pockets.
OVERSIZED PATCH POCKETS : Two large patch pockets are positioned across the lower front.
Their exaggerated scale reinforces the utility of an overshirt while visually grounding the upper shoulder and sleeve panels. The pockets are integrated into the garment’s tonal construction, with Black and Charcoal sections continuing through and around them.
Each pocket is finished with strong outlining and a curved line of contrast stitching across its surface. These arcs soften the otherwise rectangular geometry and give the pockets a distinctive identity.
Small metallic details reinforce the upper corners, adding durability and a restrained industrial finish without overwhelming the monochromatic design.
CONTRAST STITCHING : Pale contrast stitching traces the principal seams, panel divisions, neckline, belt, sleeves and pockets.
Instead of being concealed, the stitching is intentionally visible. It works almost like a technical drawing placed directly onto the garment, showing how each section has been assembled.
Straight lines follow the shoulders and centre opening, while curved stitching appears across the pockets. This combination creates a visual record of the garment’s construction and prevents the dark palette from becoming visually indistinct.
Minor variations in the exact appearance of stitching may occur between individually constructed pieces.
WIDE SLEEVES : The full-length sleeves are cut with generous width from the dropped shoulders to the open cuffs.
Their shape allows unrestricted movement and contributes to the kimono-inspired silhouette. Rather than tapering tightly around the wrists, the cuffs remain broad and fall in a clean, nearly straight line.
Charcoal panels interrupt the Black sleeves around the forearms, making the sectional construction visible from the front, side and back. Contrast stitching outlines each transition and emphasises the generous scale.
Depending on the wearer’s height and arm length, the sleeves may reach the wrist or extend slightly over part of the hand.
DROPPED SHOULDERS : The shoulder seams fall beyond the natural shoulder line, creating a broader and more relaxed upper body.
This placement supports the wide sleeves and gives the overshirt its commanding horizontal proportion. The contrast yoke visually strengthens this effect while the unstructured construction keeps it comfortable.
The dropped shoulders allow the garment to accommodate layering without becoming restrictive through the upper arms.
OPEN-FRONT CONSTRUCTION : Above and below the waist closure, the front remains intentionally open.
This prevents the overshirt from behaving like a fully buttoned shirt or conventional jacket. The gap at the centre reveals the body or base layer beneath, while the long neckline bands create a strong vertical line towards the hem.
The D-ring fastening provides control at the waist without eliminating the openness that defines the garment. As the wearer moves, the front edges can separate slightly, allowing the layers beneath to remain visible.
ARCHITECTURAL SILHOUETTE : The Shōgun Stitch Overshirt is organised around intersecting directions.
The shoulder panels create a broad horizontal structure. The V-neck descends diagonally towards the centre. The waist belt crosses the body before meeting the D-ring, and its extended tail then falls vertically.
The oversized pockets introduce two large rectangular forms near the hem, while curved stitching breaks their geometry. Together, these elements create a balanced but deliberately segmented composition.
From the front, the neckline and D-ring closure dominate. From the side, the wide sleeves and projecting pockets become more apparent. In motion, the open front and extended belt introduce movement between the structured panels.
SHAPE : Designed with dropped shoulders, a deep open neckline, relaxed body, adjustable waist, oversized pockets, wide sleeves and a straight hip-length hem.
The silhouette remains broad through the shoulders and sleeves, while the D-ring belt allows the waist to be drawn inward slightly. The body does not become sharply fitted; even when secured, it retains the intended ease of an overshirt.
The hem falls around the hip, making the garment substantial enough to function as a light outer layer without reaching the length of a coat.
FIT : Intentionally relaxed, with dropped shoulders, generous sleeves and ease through the chest and body.
Select your usual size for the intended oversized silhouette. Size down for a more controlled fit or size up for additional width and layering space.
The D-ring belt provides limited adjustment at the waist but should not be treated as a replacement for selecting the correct garment size.
Custom alterations may be requested for the shoulder width, chest, sleeve length, body width, belt length, pocket placement or overall garment length.
CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE-INSPIRED LUXURY : The Shōgun Stitch Overshirt expresses luxury through construction, proportion and finishing rather than excessive ornamentation.
Its visual impact comes from the quiet tension between Black and Charcoal, the broadness of its sleeves, the depth of its neckline and the exposed lines that reveal how the garment has been assembled.
The Japanese influence is present in the open neckline, wrapped fastening and balanced volume, while the D-ring hardware, oversized utility pockets and visible stitching place the design firmly within a contemporary context.
The result is protective, practical and theatrical without becoming costume-like.
VERSATILE STYLING : Wear the Shōgun Stitch Overshirt against the skin for a sharper editorial expression, or layer it over a fitted vest, tonal T-shirt, Mandarin-collar shirt or lightweight high-neck top.
Pair it with Black wide-leg trousers for a continuous monochromatic silhouette, or combine it with Charcoal trousers to emphasise the panel contrast. It may also be styled with structured denim or tailored pleated pants.
Leave the D-ring belt slightly relaxed for an open, fluid shape, or draw it closer to the body to introduce more definition at the waist. The extended belt end should be allowed to fall naturally.
The trousers, base layers, footwear, jewellery and other accessories shown in the imagery are styling elements and are not included with the Shōgun Stitch Overshirt.
PRODUCTION TIMELINE : Each Shōgun Stitch Overshirt requires approximately 7–10 days to create. The garment is cut and constructed only after an order has been placed.
Particular attention is given to arranging the Black and Charcoal panels, balancing the shoulder construction, finishing the deep V-neck, aligning the contrast stitching, forming the wide sleeves, reinforcing the oversized pockets and positioning the D-ring waist closure.
This production period does not include delivery time.
CUSTOMISATION OPTION : Conscious of our environmental responsibility, Insane Shell is a 100% made-to-order brand. Every piece ordered through our website is created specifically for you. Our standard size chart is designed to accommodate a wide range of body types.
If you require alterations to the shoulders, chest, sleeve length, body width, belt length, pocket placement or overall garment length, select the CUSTOM option while placing your order. Our team will contact you for the necessary measurements and details.
PLEASE NOTE : The Shōgun Stitch Overshirt is intentionally designed with a deep, open neckline. A base layer is not included and may be added according to the wearer’s preferred coverage and styling.
The D-ring belt is designed to refine the waist but does not close the entire front of the garment. The neckline and lower opening will remain partially visible when the belt is secured.
The tonal surface pattern, contrast panels and stitching may appear more or less pronounced under different lighting conditions.
Minor variations in stitching, panel alignment and the fall of the extended belt may occur between individually constructed pieces. These variations are inherent to the production process and make every garment subtly individual.
Dark fabric may transfer colour when exposed to moisture or repeated friction, particularly during its first few wears. Avoid prolonged contact with pale clothing, accessories or upholstery while the overshirt is damp.
DELIVERY TIMELINE : Once production is complete and the overshirt has been dispatched, delivery takes approximately 3–15 days, depending on your destination and courier service. We deliver across India and internationally.
Customs duties, import taxes or other destination-specific charges, where applicable, are the responsibility of the customer.
EXPEDITED DELIVERY : If you require expedited shipping with an estimated transit time of 2–3 days, please contact our customer-care team with your delivery location and required date before placing your order.
We will assist you with a special request wherever production feasibility, courier availability and the destination permit. Expedited shipping refers to transit after dispatch and does not automatically reduce the 7–10-day production timeline unless confirmed by our team before the order is placed.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS : Professional dry cleaning only to preserve the tonal fabric, contrast panels, visible stitching, pocket structure and metallic D-ring hardware.
Do not wash, bleach, soak, wring or tumble dry. Avoid rubbing individual marks, as this may disturb the surface finish or cause uneven colour.
If pressing is required, turn the garment inside out and use low to medium heat with a protective cloth. Press each panel separately and follow the direction of the existing seams. Do not iron directly over the metallic D-ring.
Store the overshirt on a broad hanger with the belt passed loosely through the D-ring. Empty the patch pockets before storage and avoid placing heavy objects inside them, as prolonged weight may alter their shape.
Keep the garment away from sharp jewellery, rough surfaces and hook-and-loop fasteners that may catch the visible stitching.
EXCHANGE & RETURN : We offer a free exchange within 30 days of delivery in case of sizing issues or damage. We do not accept returns because every garment is created specifically for its wearer.
When a made-to-order piece is returned or left unaccepted, it risks becoming waste—and that is something we do not wish to promote.
