Mandarin Blazer
The Mandarin Blazer reimagines traditional tailoring through an architectural, East Asian-influenced silhouette. Crafted from premium cotton-blend suiting in charcoal black with fine vertical pinstripes, the design replaces conventional lapels and buttons with a crossed mandarin-inspired collar, an asymmetrical wrap front and black Chinese knot closures.
Its shoulders extend sharply beyond the natural frame, producing a controlled, armour-like line across the upper body. Below, the blazer is deliberately cropped and restrained, allowing the projected shoulders and diagonal front construction to command the silhouette.
The result sits between blazer, ceremonial jacket and wearable architecture—a contemporary Insane Shell interpretation of power dressing shaped through proportion rather than ornamentation.
INSPIRATION : The Mandarin Blazer takes inspiration from the disciplined lines of traditional Mandarin clothing, the intelligence of Chinese wrap construction and the authority of exaggerated power tailoring.
Traditional Chinese garments often create closure and direction through overlapping panels rather than a conventional central placket. Here, that principle is translated into a diagonal front that crosses the body and fastens away from the centre.
The sculpted shoulders introduce a second influence: protective armour and architectural rooflines. Rather than reproducing any historical garment, Insane Shell brings these visual languages together in an original contemporary silhouette.
FABRIC : Crafted from premium cotton-blend suiting fabric with a smooth tailored finish and fine vertical pinstripes.
Cotton introduces breathability and comfort, while the blended construction provides the body required to support the projected shoulders, cropped shape and clean wrap front. The fabric remains refined and structured without appearing unnecessarily heavy.
The narrow pinstripes introduce subtle movement across the dark surface. Their vertical direction contrasts with the diagonal front panel, allowing the construction to become visible without additional embellishment.
EXAGGERATED STRUCTURED SHOULDERS : The defining feature of the Mandarin Blazer is its sharply extended shoulder line. Internal structure projects the silhouette beyond the wearer’s natural shoulders, creating a broad and deliberate frame.
The shoulders are angular rather than softly padded. Their controlled geometry gives the blazer an armour-like presence while making the waist and cropped hem appear comparatively narrow.
Because the shoulder construction is integral to the design, the blazer should not collapse or drape like an unstructured jacket.
MANDARIN-INSPIRED COLLAR : A raised collar frames the neck before crossing into a restrained V-shaped opening at the front.
Unlike a conventional blazer, the garment has no notched lapel. The continuous collar preserves the vertical clarity of the neckline and connects directly with the asymmetrical wrap panel.
Its shape references Mandarin and traditional Chinese collars while remaining distinctly contemporary in proportion and execution.
ASYMMETRICAL WRAP FRONT : The front panel travels diagonally from the shoulder towards the opposite side of the body, creating an overlapping wrap construction.
This angled line interrupts the vertical pinstripes and brings visual movement to an otherwise controlled surface. The wrap also allows the blazer to close without a conventional centre-front button arrangement.
The construction appears clean and restrained from a distance; on closer inspection, the diagonal seam and offset fastenings reveal the complexity of the pattern cutting.
CHINESE KNOT CLOSURES : Black fabric knot closures are positioned along the asymmetrical edge of the wrap front.
Their tonal colour allows them to remain subtle against the charcoal-black fabric while introducing texture and a clear connection to traditional Chinese fastening systems. The closures are treated as functional design elements rather than ornamental additions.
Each one is carefully aligned so the front panel remains secure without disturbing the pinstripe pattern or architectural silhouette.
SLEEVES : Full-length sleeves descend from the exaggerated shoulders in a comparatively narrow, controlled line.
This contrast is intentional: the upper body begins with extreme width before resolving into clean, elongated sleeves. The absence of excessive volume through the arms keeps the shoulder architecture sharp rather than costume-like.
CROPPED SILHOUETTE : The blazer finishes around the natural waist, creating a clean cropped hem that exposes the waistband of the garment worn beneath it.
The abbreviated length prevents the broad shoulders from overwhelming the body and gives the design a precise, modern proportion. It also allows the blazer to work naturally with high-waisted trousers, skirts and layered separates.
SHAPE : Designed with a broad architectural upper body, straight cropped torso, asymmetrical wrap front and long fitted sleeves.
The silhouette is intentionally top-heavy, using width across the shoulders and restraint through the body to create a strong inverted shape. The clean hem brings the construction to an abrupt, controlled finish.
FIT : Structured through the shoulders and more controlled through the torso and sleeves. Select your usual size for the intended architectural silhouette.
We do not recommend sizing down, as the wrap front and shoulder construction are designed to sit in specific positions on the body. If you require adjustments to the chest, shoulder width, sleeve length or overall length, select the CUSTOM option while ordering.
COLOUR : Available in Charcoal Black with fine grey pinstripes.
The near-monochromatic palette allows the construction to remain the focus. Depending on the light, the fabric may appear deep black from a distance and reveal its softer charcoal tone and vertical stripe pattern at closer range.
ARCHITECTURAL TAILORING : The Mandarin Blazer creates impact without embroidery, print or decorative excess. Its identity comes from internal structure, directional pattern cutting and carefully controlled proportion.
The projected shoulders establish the frame, the diagonal wrap introduces movement and the cropped hem brings the entire composition to a precise conclusion.
CONTEMPORARY AVANT-GARDE LUXURY : This is not a conventional office blazer. While it retains the discipline of tailoring, its exaggerated proportions and culturally informed closure system move it into a more experimental space.
Its luxury lies in the complexity concealed beneath a restrained exterior—the internal shoulder construction, alignment of the pinstripes, balance of the wrap panel and positioning of every knot closure.
STYLING : Pair the Mandarin Blazer with high-waisted wide-leg trousers to extend its architectural proportions, or combine it with a long column skirt for a sharper vertical silhouette.
A monochromatic black foundation keeps attention on the shoulders and wrap construction. For contrast, it may be layered over a white or ivory base, allowing the collar and asymmetrical opening to become more pronounced.
The trousers, belt, footwear and other accessories shown in the imagery are styling elements and are not included with the Mandarin Blazer.
PRODUCTION TIMELINE : Each Mandarin Blazer requires approximately 15–20 days to create. The garment is cut and constructed only after an order has been placed.
Particular attention is given to building the internal shoulder structure, aligning the pinstripes, balancing the asymmetrical wrap, shaping the mandarin-inspired collar and positioning each Chinese knot closure accurately.
CUSTOMISATION OPTION : Conscious of our environmental responsibility, Insane Shell is a 100% made-to-order brand. Every piece ordered through our website is created specifically for you. Our standard size chart is designed to accommodate a wide range of body types.
If you require alterations to the chest, shoulder width, sleeve length, blazer length or overall proportions, select the CUSTOM option while placing your order, and our team will contact you for the necessary measurements and details.
PLEASE NOTE : The exaggerated shoulders are an intentional part of the silhouette and will extend beyond the wearer’s natural shoulder line. They should not be interpreted as an oversized sizing issue.
Minor differences in stripe alignment or the finish of the fabric knot closures may occur between pieces due to the made-to-order construction. The colour and pinstripe visibility may also appear different depending on lighting and screen settings.
DELIVERY TIMELINE : Once production is complete and the product has been dispatched, delivery takes approximately 3–15 days, depending on your destination and courier service. We deliver across India and internationally. Customs duties, import taxes or other destination-specific charges, where applicable, are the responsibility of the customer.
EXPEDITED DELIVERY : If you require expedited shipping with an estimated transit time of 2–3 days, please contact our customer-care team with your delivery location and required date before placing your order. We will assist you with a special request wherever production feasibility, courier availability and the destination permit.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS : Professional dry cleaning only. Do not wash, soak, wring or tumble dry. Do not iron or apply direct heat over the structured shoulders or Chinese knot closures.
If steaming is required, use gentle steam from a safe distance without compressing the shoulder construction. Store the blazer on a broad, supportive hanger with sufficient space around the shoulders. Do not place heavy garments over it, as prolonged pressure may affect its architectural form.
EXCHANGE & RETURN : We offer a free exchange within 30 days of delivery in case of sizing issues or damage. We do not accept returns because every garment is created specifically for its wearer. When a made-to-order piece is returned or left unaccepted, it risks becoming waste—and that is something we do not wish to promote.
